Project Highlights:

  1. SITU Energy’s first full energisation – successfully delivering the full high-voltage connection and bringing the site fully online.
  2. MFG/Morrisons first energisation – achieving a milestone for both MFG and Morrisons with seamless power activation on a live operational site.
  3. Delivered on programme – site opened to the public on the agreed date, maintaining uninterrupted service and demonstrating our ability to manage complex, time-sensitive projects.

The Challenge:

At MFG Palmers Green in London, we were appointed as Principal Contractor, delivering a full scope of works that included civils and ICP responsibilities to enable a rapid, high-quality upgrade. The project required the installation of six EV charging bays supported by three 400kW Alpitronic chargers, the relocation of an on-site recycling bin, and a new HV connection, all within a tight turnaround programme and with minimal disruption to daily operations.

The site itself presented several complexities. Located in close proximity to Network Rail infrastructure, the project demanded stringent compliance with regulatory requirements and careful management of risk. Compounding this, the construction zone was positioned directly on the main delivery route for Morrisons, making it critical to maintain uninterrupted access for the supermarket’s logistics throughout the works.

Challenging ground conditions further added to the scope. The entire sub-surface was reinforced concrete, with the point of connection (POC) situated below the water table. This required precise engineering and specialist planning to ensure both resilience and safety. The project also included the installation of a Lucy Electric substation, providing the essential infrastructure to power the new high-capacity EV facilities.

The Solution:

We provided a complete, end-to-end delivery package at MFG Palmers Green, acting as Principal Contractor while also managing all civils and ICP works. Our team oversaw the relocation of the recycling facilities, carried out specialist groundworks to overcome the reinforced concrete sub-surface, and installed the new Lucy Electric substation to support the high-voltage connection.

Central to the project was the installation of six new EV charging bays, equipped with three 400kW Alpitronic chargers. These state-of-the-art modular DC ultra-fast chargers are built for high-voltage electric vehicles, providing up to 400 kW of power and the ability to distribute energy across multiple vehicles simultaneously. They are celebrated for their reliable performance, compact design, and energy efficiency, and feature a large touchscreen interface for intuitive operation. Fully scalable, they can be upgraded from lower-power models, making them ideal for both public and fleet charging applications.

Careful planning and close client coordination ensured the construction zone was managed without disrupting Morrisons’ delivery operations, maintaining essential supply routes to the supermarket throughout the works. Despite the complexities of working near Network Rail infrastructure and below the water table for the point of connection, our team delivered the full HV-connected site seamlessly, adhering to all safety and compliance standards. The entire programme was completed in just eight weeks, with handover on the exact date agreed at the project outset.

The Results:

The completed Palmers Green project stands as a showcase of speed, precision, and technical capability. The site now features six high-powered EV bays with three 400kW Alpitronic chargers, delivering reliable and rapid charging for customers in one of London’s busiest areas. The installation of the Lucy Electric substation and full HV connection ensures the site has the power capacity and resilience required to support growing EV demand well into the future.

The site was energised on the exact day scheduled three months prior, reflecting meticulous planning and coordination. Position feedback from the client was extremely positive, and further projects are now underway as a direct result of this successful delivery. The forecourt opened to the public on the agreed programme date, maintaining the client’s revenue stream and demonstrating our ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects on time, safely, and without disruption.

By overcoming challenging ground conditions, maintaining uninterrupted Morrisons deliveries, and working near Network Rail infrastructure, this project highlights our expertise in delivering high-spec, high-impact forecourt solutions for modern road users.
