Project Highlights:

  1. Modern Heating – 400 radiators and 100 radiant panels installed for reliable, efficient warmth.
  2. Safe and Secure – High-security, anti-ligature systems ensure maximum safety compliance.
  3. Efficient Water and Drainage – Smart water controls and upgraded cast iron drainage enhance hygiene and reduce maintenance.

The Challenge:

HMP Birmingham, a Victorian-era Category B prison housing 1,450 male inmates, required a comprehensive refurbishment of its historic Victorian section, covering A, B, and C Wings. The project for His Majesty’s Prison Service involved a full replacement of the low-temperature hot water pipework, including 400 radiators and 100 radiant panels, to modernise heating and ensure reliable performance across the facility.

In addition, a complete domestic installation was required, using Mapress copper to service 360 cells and ancillary areas, alongside a full above-ground drainage system in cast iron, with new sanitaryware and smart water controls. All mechanical installations had to meet the highest security standards and incorporate anti-ligature equipment, ensuring safety and compliance throughout the prison environment.

The scale, complexity, and secure environment of the project presented significant challenges, requiring precise planning, specialist expertise, and careful coordination to deliver a modern, secure, and fully compliant mechanical system within a live prison setting.

The Solution:

Situ M&E approached the refurbishment of HMP Birmingham’s Victorian section with a carefully planned strategy to deliver a fully modern, secure, and reliable mechanical system. The team replaced the low-temperature hot water pipework throughout A, B, and C Wings, installing 400 radiators and 100 radiant panels to ensure consistent, efficient heating across the facility.

A full domestic installation was completed using Mapress copper, serving 360 cells and all ancillary areas, while a new above-ground cast iron drainage system was installed, including sanitaryware with smart water controls to enhance efficiency and reduce water consumption. Pre-manufactured 360 cast iron stacks for the high security cells offsite. All mechanical installations were designed and fitted using high-security, anti-ligature equipment, meeting the strict safety and compliance standards required within a Category B prison.

The project required precise coordination, specialist installation expertise, and careful planning to integrate new systems within the operational prison environment. By combining technical excellence with attention to security and safety, Situ M&E delivered a modern mechanical infrastructure that enhances comfort, safety, and operational efficiency across HMP Birmingham.

The Results:

The refurbishment of HMP Birmingham’s Victorian wings has delivered a modern, efficient, and secure mechanical system that enhances both comfort and safety for inmates and staff. The new low-temperature hot water system, including 400 radiators and 100 radiant panels, provides reliable and consistent heating throughout A, B, and C Wings.

The upgraded domestic installations, cast iron drainage system, and smart water controls improve water efficiency and hygiene, while the use of high-security, anti-ligature equipment ensures compliance with strict prison safety standards.

By integrating these modern systems into a live prison environment with minimal disruption, Situ M&E has helped HMP Birmingham achieve improved operational efficiency, reduced maintenance requirements, and enhanced living conditions, while maintaining the highest levels of safety and security.
